DOWNTOWN ALBUQUERQUE
If you're thinking of relocating or retiring to the Albuquerque area and are considring buying a home or condo in the Downtown area, this is some information to help you decide if it's the right area for you and to get familiar with all Downtown Albuquerque has to offer.
Downtown Albuquerque has developed, changed and grown over the years. Once a quiet, business only area Downtown Albuquerque now features new condos and townhomes, renovated cottages, new homes and lots to do for the area resident.
As a native New Yorker, I often walk the streets of Downtown Albuquerque thinking of my years in New York. There is an urban feel in Downtown and EDO (or Huning Highlands) that does not exist in the rest of Albuquerque. The sidewalks are wider, the buildings are taller, the stores are near enough to one another to do some window shopping. You can even find an old exposed brick building or two.
Below is a list of the increasing number of restaurants, bars and cultural opportunities in Downtown Albuquerque and EDO. I hope you enjoy exploring the area that is quickly becoming one of the hubs of our city.

NOB HILL ALBUQUERUE
If you're exploring the Nob Hill or UNM (University of New Mexico) area of Albuquerque as the place you want to buy a home or condo you will find a suprising array or options including new condos, renovated pueblo style homes and lots of homes waiting for you to bring one of them up to date and make it your own. Real estate in the Nob Hill area has traditionally been heavily sought after and has come with a premium. Many find the slightly higher price range of Nob Hill to be well worth the investment and would live no where else.
Nob Hill (also called the Nob Hill-Highland District) is the area roughly between San Mateo and the University area, on and just north and south of Central Ave, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Nob Hill features many restaurants, gift shops, parks, bars, dance clubs, bookstores, specialty stores, art galleries, our only art-house movie theater and an organic food co-op. Since it's so close to UNM, there's a lot of activity, including theater, film, and dining, and people can be seen walking around all hours of the day and night.
Just south of Nob Hill is Ridgecrest, also highly sought after area. The Ridgecrest area features many small parks, tree lined streets and beautiful homes. Lot sizes tend to be slightly larger than the Nob Hill homes closer to Central and are often very lush and green. There are homes in this area ranging from the low $200's (for small fixer-uppers) to the millions for large estate-like homes. In both the Nob Hill and Ridgecrest areas the homes tend to be pueblo style and some are even actual Adobe homes. These homes come with a premium for the charm, energy efficiency and historic value Adobe brings with it.
Below is a list of restaurants and other information about Nob Hill you might find interesting.

Mannie's Family Restaurant
Model Pharmacy & Fountain (Old fashioned soda shop/pharmacy, you can eat lunch and do some pharmacy or perfume shopping.)

Below are some of my favorite stores in the area. Check them out for gifts, or treats for yourself:
Hey Johnny
Wonderful gifts and treasures to be found here. Their collection of chopsticks alone is impressive. Not to mention the high quality found in every item. Plus they make every bag a gift bag, so it's perfect for that last minute item on your way to a house warming or birthday party.
Beeps
Stroll over there after dinner at Scalo, it's tons of fun, it's impossible to go in there without buying something. Novelties, journals, funny and touching greeting cards, this store has been a fixture of Nob Hill for years.
Self Serve
If you are feeling indulgent, and a little sassy, this is the perfect store to go to alone or with your mate. The owners and staff make you feel very comfortable and they have lots of great workshops and events happening all the time.
Sachs
For all of your body art needs. Tattoos, and every piercing you can imagine. You'll recognize the store by the huge, pierced leather bears in the window.
Gertrude Zachary
Really affordable nice jewelry, and interesting and beautiful gift and home decorating options. Also, a very helpful, knowledgeable staff.
Celebro Clothing
All natural fibers. They have some mens' clothing too. Check out the high quality men's t-shirts in the back room.
Larry's Hats and Accessories
One of the first stores I went into when I came to Albuquerque. Check out the other great stores on the same block.
Red Wing Shoes
Perfect for the rugged boot wearer. I am personally tempted by the pink, fake hiking boots in the window. I might just have to indulge.
Relish
Great dresses and flowery clothing. They feature some interesting and really nice purses too.
Off Broadway
On Central. Cool vintage clothing and costumes. Great place to find high end vintage men's and women's clothing dating as far back as the 1800's. Reminds me a cool NYC stores.

UPTOWN ALBUQUERQUE
Considering Uptown Albuquerque for your new home or condo? This area offers a great many home options, but less in the way of condos than Downtown or Nob Hill. That said, the myriad choices in homes in the Uptown Albuquerque area are really wonderful. From authentic Mossman homes and tons of other brick homes from the 1950's and 60's, to the occassional Pueblo style home, Uptown Albuquerque is a great place to start if you want a yard, some room to roam, and yet want to be close to all of the action. And if you have your heart set on an Uptown area condo, you might not have to wait too long. There are a number of condo projects under way which will provide some great options in the years to come.
The Uptown area of Albuquerque has traditionally been a business and shopping district featuring two of Albuquerque's malls and lots of offices. It has grown in the past years to include expanded shopping, luxury apartment living, newer offices and the upscale, open air ABQ shopping center. With the expansion of Albuquerque to the north and west, the Uptown area has become a hub for a great deal of activity. There are also a number of the underused city parks in the area which are great for feeling like you're in the heart of a city. You can visit the City of Albuquerque website at www.cabq.gov for a list of city parks.
